LOCAL INFORMATION

 Devon

East Devon has the World Heritage Coast part of the South West Coastal Path. Tucked away in a south east corner is the unspoilt Axe Valley – a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are delightful seaside towns like Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth to be explored while Honiton is an historic town known for antiques, art and second-hand books.

North Devon has fine coastal scenery and deep wooded valleys or 'combes' that typify the Exmoor coastline. Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton are wide and golden, sandy beaches. A UNESCO World Biosphere area at Braunton Burrows preserves rare plants around the estuary and marshes. The area is popular for family holidays, surfing, kite-surfing, wind-surfing, kayaking and beach activities such as kite-buggying and sand yachting. Barnstaple is a lovely town with a marvellous indoor Pannier Market.

The South Hams and south Devon has river estuaries, rolling hills and thatched cottages. Romantic Dartmoor has a haunting landscape with Ashburton as the largest of its towns. Dartmouth, on the banks of the beautiful River Dart, has narrow streets of medieval houses and a castle at the mouth of the river. Salcombe is a pretty sailing and fishing harbour.
