LOCAL INFORMATION

Highlands and Islands

The scenery in the Highlands is breathtaking…spectacular mountains like Glencoe, the Nevis Range and Cairngorm, also waterfalls, tumbling rivers and magical islands. There many signs of the past here, like the Cairns and standing stones or castles like Urquhart Castle by Loch Ness, Dunvegan Castle on Skye and Ardvreck Castle by Loch Assynt.  Why not visit a Whisky Distillery? Many distilleries have visitor centres and offer tours (and tasting)! Or try spotting Bottlenose Dolphins in the Moray Firth. Take the ferry or bridge across to Skye – it’s another world.

If you are birdwatchers then head for the Flow Country of Caithness, golfers can try the ‘big name’ courses like Dornoch or Nairn, anglers cast in to the remote hill-lochs of the north-west and mountain bikers can head off-road through the forests along the Great Glen. Don’t miss the delights of Loch Lomond – breathtaking. The Highlands are the place to be.

FREEDOM RECOMMENDS:

Castles
Whiskey distilleries
Golf
Salmon fishing

Even though the people who live here are quite spread out in this area, the Highlands is one of the best places to visit for Scottish culture since it is distinctly different from the rest of Scotland. The communities have a strong sense of their heritage and many still speak the Gaelic language. Fascinating!
